Why choose a dedicated toll-free number?

An A2P toll-free number is an excellent hybrid option between a 10DLC and a short code.

These numbers are a cost-effective option for sending country-wide campaigns compared to using a short code. They are also great for not showing bias to any particular state, which is a drawback when using a 10DLC.

Toll-free Number FAQ

What is the wait time for a toll-free number?

All Burst SMS accounts are assigned a free dedicated toll-free number during the 14-day trial period. This means if you like your assigned number, you don’t need to wait for 10DLC or short code approval. If you don’t like your assigned toll-free number, you can request to change it before your billing cycle starts.

What types of toll-free messages do carriers prefer?
Even for a seasoned sender who follows spam compliance guidelines perfectly, you cannot control the types of replies you may receive. It’s important to stay on top of any negative replies you receive from message recipients, to ensure that your number does not get potentially flagged. Although you can use a toll-free number to send any type of message, carriers do prefer the following types of messages to be sent:
- Account balance, activity, fraud, and billing alerts
- Order status and dispatch notifications
- Emergency communications
- Reminders and notifications
- Scheduling, meetings, and internal communications
- Two-factor authentication
How do I get a 1-800 number?
Similar to how difficult it is to find a “.com” extension for a website, not many SMS providers provide 1-800 extensions. We do however offer a selection of 1-888, 1-866, and 1-877 numbers for you to choose from. Other toll-free types are available upon request.
Can carriers block toll-free numbers?
Since toll-free numbers are easier to obtain, individuals often try to use these for the wrong reasons. Carriers are aware of this, and will block a toll-free number if they see suspicious activity. This however should not be a problem for experienced senders who follow their local spam compliance laws.
Do customers block toll-free numbers?
Although toll-free numbers have a global reputation for being free to receive, they also have a reputation for being linked to unsolicited call centers. Customers may dislike receiving messages from these numbers due to the reputation they have through their phone variant.
